Outside In

In the previous lesson you had a chance to think through some of the things that influenced
you in your growing up years. That was to help you take a look at your family life, and ask
yourself questions about you that you may have never asked, regardless of the reasons. In
this lesson we will be asking you to get someone else’s perspective on who you are.
Whenever you focus on yourself and figuring all of that out, you may have to take some
amount of risk. Take a chance and ask three people you trust to be honest and balanced to
fill out the
viewpoint survey.

Remember that whatever the answers are, keep in mind that their perspective may be
different than your own, every person has a different set of values and experiences which
will change how each question is answered as well as what is said. Take everything with a
grain of salt, and consider every answer as an opportunity for improvement and insight into
yourself. After you have had some time to digest the insight you gain, and then move on to
the journaling.
                                            Journal Time
After you have taken some time to think about some of the things your friends have let you know
through the viewpoint survey, take a little time to read through the following scriptures.
Remember to take note of anything that stands out to you:

Genesis 2:2-3:24
Psalm 31
Psalm 119:73-80
John 17:20-18:40
Romans 9:1-24
Corinthians 12:1-13:13
Ephesians 2:1-22

7.        Take a look back at the observations you made about yourself from the previous
lessons. As you think about the things you discovered through your friends, alongside
everything else we’ve been talking about, what are two of your most surprising discoveries about
how others see you?

8.        Take a minute and think about the three strongest emotions you encountered while you
were reading what your friends said about you. What were they? Any ideas on why you felt
those emotions?

9.        Look back at the people and events that have influenced you, and gotten you to where
you are now (regardless of how happy you are with that). Take a moment to compare the
hardest obstacles you felt you had to overcome, versus what your friends saw as your hardest
obstacles you’ve had to overcome. Make a list of the top three things your friends said, and the
top three things you listed as the most difficult, than take a few minutes and write a few
sentences about each obstacle. Do you think your friends brought up valid obstacles? Were the
obstacles you listed things you kept to yourself?

10.        What are the characteristics of the friends you picked to fill out the viewpoint survey for
you? Do you feel that they gave accurate and honest answers based on the depth of your
relationship to them?

11.        Personal growth is a huge part of Christ-likeness, take a few moments to look at the
stories you remember, and some of the things your friends have said in the viewpoint survey.
What are some of the things you have learned through this that have helped to push you
towards a Christ-like character?

12.        Do you have an accountability partner? If so, share your thoughts on these things with
him or her, and spend some time in prayer over what you have discovered. If not, find someone
you are willing to talk to and share your thoughts with him or her.
