Follow the Leader
Keeping your head & heart in ministry
Lesson 1 & 2

I.
Everyone follows someone or something; this series we are concerning ourselves
with who we are following, and who is following us. A good leader does not ask his or
her followers to walk where they are not willing to go, so this time we are going to talk
about you. Some of the questions on the handout may be difficult to answer, but take a
shot at it anyway. Nobody has to see your answers; your answers can stay between you
and God. Take a couple of minutes and fill out the “Who are you?” handout.

II. After you have taken some time to think through the questions on the “Who are
you?” handout, take some time reading the book of Nehemiah and filling in the
Nehemiah handout. If in a group, hand each individual a Nehemiah handout and divide
the book of Nehemiah into ‘chunks’ having each member read only a section of the
book.  Pray that God would guide what you find and that He would reveal Himself and
His heart to you.

III. If you are working alone, find a friend, or talk to your mentor. If you are working in a
group, pair up. Share a couple of the observations you made in Nehemiah about
leadership. Discuss some of your thoughts and feelings about what you observe about
leadership in your own life. Discuss what you think the carry-over into your life from
Nehemiah might be, come up with a couple of goals for yourself to work towards in
relation to the things you found.  Pray together that God would help you in developing a
following-leader heart in you.

Group Discussion Questions: as believers, we are called to be leaders,
and followers. How do you define leader? What about follower? How does your
definition of success play into this? How are you working on being a following-leader?
